CANTEEN

CANTEEN

The main objective of MUSEKE is to feed schoolchildren in Nemba. These children are mainly chosen by the teachers with the essential requirement that the children are attending school so that we can be sure that they are receiving an adequate enough education that will allow them to fend for themselves in the future. Other children who need treatment with anti-retroviral drugs are referred to us by the hospital and they need to have a good diet to be able to go through with their treatment. Others come to us as a result of the visits made by our volunteers to homes in order to find out, in situ, what the living conditions of the children are like.  In October 2010 MUSEKE started serving meals from Monday to Saturday at midday to 20 primary children in the Nemba region (in the north of Ruanda). At the moment, MUSEKE provides meals to 240 children in Nemba. Moreover, we presently employ 15 people in the area to develop this project as well as prepare daily meals.

The canteen provides a balanced diet composed of products produced in the region , this includes potatoes, beans (frijoles), rice, vegetables (cabbage, carrots, amaranth grain), a dough made from corn flour, eggs, milk, fruit (avocados, bananas, pineapple etc.) So as not to stray from what the children normally eat with their families. The menu is varied and balanced following the advice from the nutritionist in the Nemba hospital.
